ActionAid Nigeria is inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the Communications Coordinator role.
Below is the job description for the role:
Job Title: Communications Coordinator
Location: Abuja, Nigeria
Reporting to: Director, People and Culture
Line Management: Communications Intern; Multimedia Design Consultant, Project Communication Officers
Grade: 8
Job Purpose
The Communications Coordinator reports to the Director, People and Culture and leads the Communications Hub. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing and delivering powerful and creative communications strategies and products, including planning and managing public affairs/relations and publicity to influence and inform AAN’s stakeholders, staff, partners, and donors.
S/he will liaise with and provide support to the different thematic functions at AAN on publications, digital communications, publicity, and press relations to drive the visibility, advocacy, and campaigns of AAN.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and serve as the central communications focal point for national media activities.
- Develop and implement innovative and effective communications and media strategies for ActionAid Nigeria, including fundraising and marketing initiatives.
- Manage the documentation and publication of all AAN manuals and materials, including audiovisual products, and maintain an updated repository for institutional memory and posterity.
- Strengthen the capacity of AAN staff and partners in understanding, documenting, and communicating progress across AAN’s thematic areas.
- Support the development and strengthening of partnerships among stakeholders, government institutions, and NGOs to enhance collaboration and coordination on strategic national and global priorities.
- Coordinate the annual review of AAN’s communications work, including the production of annual reports in print and multimedia formats.
- Oversee content development for AAN’s policy influencing work, website, and social media platforms.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with media, donors, supporters, and influencers to enhance AAN’s visibility and public profile.
- Oversee the production of digital and multimedia communications content in line with ActionAid Global brand guidelines and donor marking plans.
- Coordinate Advocacy and Campaign Communications for initiatives, movements and groups that AAN leads or participates in, ensuring strategic messaging alignment, rapid-response visibility, and timely, high-quality content delivery to advance advocacy objectives.
- Track, monitor, and report on AAN communications metrics, using insights to inform learning and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate high quality research, gather facts and statistics, collecting and collating complex information and turning it into accurate and engaging copy for campaigns and policy influencing
- Any other responsibilities as assigned by the line manager.
Key Working Relationships:
Internal: Entire AAN Staff, Relevant AAI Staff
External: The Media, Relevant Government Agencies, Donor Community, Influencers, Partners, Vendors, Communities, INGO Community and other stakeholders.
Persons Specifications
Education/Qualifications:
- First degree in communications, socials sciences or arts/humanities is essential.
- Masters degree in relevant field is desirable.
- Membership of Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), and Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) is desirable.
- Membership of NUJ and other relevant professional bodies is desirable.
Experience:
- At least 7 years work experience 4 of which should have been spent in similar role in the development sector is essential.
- Experience managing communication, advocacy and campaigns projects; working with the media is essential.
- Excellent research, writing and copy-editing skills with ability to flag potential risks and safeguarding concerns within first-hand testimony is essential.
- Creative storyteller, able to bring new ideas and think outside the box is essential.
- Experience of working with freelance journalists, story gatherers, photographers and videographers in challenging contexts and/or on sensitive topics is essential.
- Experience of gathering, commissioning or post-producing high quality multi-media content internationally is essential.
- Website development/management and digital communications is essential.
- Capacity building experience including training, facilitating, coaching, and mentoring is essential.
- Experience as a media focal person for an organisation/department is essential.
- Practical knowledge of Artificial Intelligence applications in communications, including ethical considerations in content creation and storytelling for development is essential.
- Knowledge of desk publishing and photo-editing software (e.g. InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator etc.) is desirable
- Knowledge of emerging trends in digital communication building and contents is desirable.
